valbeek is growing

SJPP Rechtsanwälte merges with valbeek as of July 1, 2025.
The corporate law practice of the renowned Hamburg boutique law firm SJPP Schmidt-Jortzig Petersen Penzlin merges with valbeek Partnerschaft von Rechtsanwälten mbB. The partners Dr. Edzard Schmidt-Jortzig, Dr. Bjarne Petersen and Dr. Philippe Rollin will join valbeek as partners. They will be accompanied by managing associate Thomas Hertig and associate Jonas Freise.
With these additions, valbeek will expand to 14 corporate lawyers, making it one of the largest corporate law teams in northern Germany. The firm remains focused on strategically beneficial growth.
In addition to strengthening its core areas of M&A, corporate law and dispute resolution, the merger brings valbeek new expertise in public law structuring / regulations and at the interface of restructuring and reorganization advisory.
The merger also sharpens valbeek’s profile as a highly specialized, independent corporate and transaction law firm whose partners have many years of experience in leading transactions and other strategic projects of all sizes, as well as in resolving complex disputes. Clients of both valbeek and SJPP’s transaction practice include domestic and foreign financial investors, entrepreneurs, family-owned businesses and national as well as international listed companies.
The newly merged firm will continue to provide clients with business-oriented legal advice, maintaining the quality standards of major law firms while delivering the tailored service of a specialized boutique law firm. With this merger, the partners are setting the stage for the future in a constantly evolving legal market - positioning themselves as a compelling alternative to the leading large law firms and offering partner-driven, dynamic and efficient advice, even on complex and large-scale projects.
SJPP Insolvenzverwaltung, led by partners and insolvency administrators Dr. Dietmar Penzlin, Niklas Marwedel and Dr. Christian Mikolajczak, will continue to operate independently with a 12-person team of insolvency lawyers and clerks, in the areas of insolvency administration, restructuring advice and distressed M&A. Both firms intend to continue working closely together, particularly at the intersection of insolvency law and M&A/corporate law.
Founded in 2007 as a spin-off of the Hamburg office of White & Case, SJPP has grown into a visible unit in the areas of M&A/corporate law, regulatory law and insolvency law in the almost 18 years of its existence.
In 2009, SJPP was awarded the first Juve Gründerzeit Award, in 2014 it was recognized as Juve Law Firm of the Year of the northern Germany region and in 2015 as Juve Law Firm of the Year for insolvency administration.
