valbeek and von Ilsemann Helms advise UniverCell on Series B round

We are pleased to have provided legal counsel to UniverCell Holding GmbH on its Series B financing round totaling 30 million euros. On the investor side, participants included, among others, the state-backed Deeptech & Climate Fund (DTCF) and the EU innovation program European Innovation Council (EIC Fund).

The funds raised will be used to build a new production facility where UniverCell will begin series production of its proprietary lithium-ion battery cells in Schleswig-Holstein starting in June—with an initial monthly capacity of 50,000 cylindrical cells. Production is set to be scaled up significantly in stages; the target for 2027 is an annual production of approximately 1.3 gigawatt-hours. This would make UniverCell one of the largest manufacturers of specialized cells in Europe. UniverCell is targeting future markets such as satellite and space technology, critical infrastructure, and medical technology—with a clear commitment to a sovereign European solution.

The valbeek team, consisting of our partner Dr. Edzard A. Schmidt-Jortzig and managing associate Thomas W. Hertig, advised on the transaction together with Julian von Ilsemann and Gunnar Helms (of Ilsemann Helms Partnerschaft von Rechtsanwälten mbB, Hamburg), who have served as UniverCell’s regular legal advisors since the company’s early years. We would like to express our sincere thanks for the consistently professional and trusting collaboration.

Our thanks go to the entire UniverCell team led by Dr. Stefan Permien and Marius Strack for the trust they have placed in us and for the constructive and collaborative dialogue.

We wish you every success in the continued implementation of your growth strategy!
